High School Admissions Peril Part III

Borough Wide High School Fair Weekend

Saturday October 24 and Sunday October 25, 11:00–3:00

Locations:

Brooklyn Schools: Edward R. Murrow High School, 1600 Avenue L

Manhattan Schools: Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus, 122 Amsterdam Avenue

Queens Schools: Francis Lewis High School, 58-20 Utopia Parkway

Bronx Schools: Theodore Roosevelt Campus, 500 East Fordham Road

Staten Island: New Dorp High School, 465 New Dorp Lane

Main reason to go – Limited Opt Schools only consider students who have done tours or sign–in at their table during the Fairs!

Who should go – best to go in 7th grade, but 8th grade families with children who are academically in the middle and/or have no particular interests or artistic talents should attend. Most schools appeal more to the on-level child, as opposed to the gifted test takers and gifted artists.

What to expect – expect a zoo of people crowding the tables of the most popular high schools and expect interesting finds at the least–populated tables. But in general, throughout the space, expect it to be hot, confusing and frustrating.

Why go - this is a chance to speak to representatives from all the schools in one place, as a pre–cursor to doing a site visit to each school. (The Citywide Fair, which occurred October 3-4, was advantageous to those applying to schools in more than one borough)

What will you get – brochures, answers to your questions, one–on–one with the high school students and representatives, peeks at yearbooks on display, a chance to survey which school have the most buzz.

At the least, walk by each table, read their names, their themes. Actually ask questions of those who pique your interest. You may discover a school not mentioned among the parents at the PTA meetings.

Good luck.
